Applying Tracking Technology:
The Ongoing Trend in Modern Airports

With the increasing need of position monitoring for various purposes such as security, resource allocation and behavior analysis, tracking technology has become more and more popular in the recent years.

Due to the increasing popularity of using tracking systems, airports have also started using such technologies. At the Helsiniki Airport, once mobile phones are connected to the Wi-Fi network, passenger's real time movements will be monitored. Passengers can also log into the network to check out offers from nearby shops and restaurants. Likewise, the Hong Kong International Airport has a top tracking system but for baggage. The HKIA utilizes RFID technology to track their baggage and have developed a comprehensive network to facilitate further improvements in baggage handling.

With the continuous upward trend in these tracking technologies, more airports will benefit from it. It will become a good chance for the growth of HKC's business, since the company's expertise in RFID Solutions will help it to get ready to cater the growing demands of tracking.

HKC currently owns two types of featured tracking solutions, the asset management solution and real-time location tracking solution. The asset management solution helps users to locate items, view who is responsible for those items, and identify the time the item was taken away or returned to its location. The real-time location tracking solutions enables both personnel and item tracking. Both solutions help firms improve their efficiency and maximize their utility.

In Sep 2015, HKC was invited to showcase in the HKIA Technovation Conference and Exhibition 2015 as one of the exhibitors. HKC's asset management and real-time location tracking solution successfully attracted enquiries from different airports and supporting industries all over the world, which is a proof of the ongoing trend of tracking technology application in modern airports.

In June 2015, Singcomm was awarded the Personnel Tracking System (PTS) implementation project for the new Thomson MRT Line in Singapore. The PTS is a RFID technology based tracking system which is networked scalable to track personnel accessing to deep excavation confined spaces to monitor their safety and health condition.

Before entering the confined space, each personnel will have a RFID tag attached to their safety helmet upon completion of the site safety induction training. As the personnel passes through the RFID gantry, the system will record and time stamps the personnel's time of entry and exit. This information is then transmitted to the web-based PTS application software where the dashboard will display the real-time information of the location of those working in the confined space.

Hence, this system improves efficiency of the ingress and egress people traffic movement in the confined spaces, it also performed as an automated accountability tool; it provides accurate real-time information on site thus reduces the risk of incorrect information submitted to the Singapore Land Transport Authority and Building & Construction Authority on the day-to-day basis and most importantly during disaster recovery operations.

Singcomm has successfully implemented and commissioned the PTS and it is now operating under live environment.
