Library Automation: Latest Trends and Applications

In today's society, technology has been developed to the point where libraries can be self-serviced and efficiently managed through automation applications.

As an experienced library solution provider, HKC offers various library automation solutions that apply RFID/EM technology. The product portfolio includes Staff Stations, Security Gates, Self-Service check in/ out kiosks, Stock TakeTrolley/Handheld and 24-hour book drop and book sorter, which benefit both the librarians and the patrons. The self-service applications are also able to run in hybrid (EM/RFID) models for smooth migration from EM to RFID technology to cater the expansion of library capacity.

It has been an upcoming trend for libraries to hire robotic librarians instead of human librarians. The University of Chicago and the University of Technology, Sydney both have robotic cranes that act as librarians. The libraries are light on book display because books are stored in a warehouse in which temperature and humidity conditions are more ideal for books. Students command a search online and the information is sent to the crane. The crane will deliver the books to the librarian, in which the librarian will then distribute to the students.

Catching up this trend, HKC is also developing a new generation of book dispensers. The book dispenser applies robotic cranes to carry the selected book for the reader. The dispenser is mobile and has a modular design that will allow the device to fit in different spaces. With this device, readers can conveniently register their reader card, browse books on-shelve and check-in/check-out books by themselves. The dispenser can be placed in populated places such as schools, companies, hospitals, the community, subway stations, airports and more.

Research studies show that library automation incites students to read more. Although ebooks are becoming popular, students still prefer to real thing. With that said, HKC's innovation in library automation will be able to provide a more user friendly and more desirable learning environment. In addition, HKC will continue to develop the required technology to match those of the latest trends.

Every year, Singapore Exhibition Services (SES) will ask Singcomm to set up the RFID Personnel Tracking System at the Marina Bay Sands for CommunicAsia and OSEA events. After the event, Singcomm will be asked to disassemble the system again.

The RFID Personnel Tracking System was designed to track the movement of approximately 60,000 visitors across different floor levels. The purpose for tracking was to give a better insight to event organizers on patronage for their different shows at the same venue. However, the visitor tracking system is only installed for short-term events.

To collect data, the mat antenna is installed at all entry and exit points to capture the movement of any visitors passing through. Readers on a certain floor level will communicate to a Data Collector for that level. All the collected data will be stored in a central database. Event organizers will be able to view the statistics through a single-page user interface.
