The Trend of Real Time Location Tracking System (RTLS)

Example Frame
Over the last decade, Real Time Location Tracking System (RTLS) gained significant opportunities in the manufacturing, warehousing, logistics and retail sectors for tracking key productivity inputs in the business purposes of workflow improvement and cost-saving. Nowadays, RTLS application integrated with ubiquitous Wi-Fi network and powerful Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technologies is more widely used in our daily lives. Increasing use in personal and asset tracking in the industries such as tourism & public transportation, healthcare and education drives the growing of RTLS market. In 2011, the RTLS global market was reported to be about USD 256 million and after that the market grows by about 20% per year and the market is estimated to reach USD 4 billion by 2022 (data from Transparency Market Research, "Real Time Location System (RTLS) Market - Global Industry Size, Share, Trends, Analysis And Forecasts 2012 - 2018").

The key advantage of RTLS is real-time tracking and locating assets and people, thus RTLS adapts to different business objectives for optimizing workflow and staff management, improving safety of both people and key facilities. RTLS could be implemented to public event or public area. In the case of Sik Sik Yuen's Wi-Fi based RTLS solution, nearly 250 visitors are provided of location-based tour guide service and added value services through the self-developed application installed on their mobile devices. With the mobile application, RTLS could be a tool for event management in the near future, to monitor the public transportation in large events or to provide event details to specific individuals through mobile devices.

Healthcare and Education is another innovative and potential market for RTLS application. According to the Spring 2013 edition of the Economic Outlook survey, 43% of hospital executives stated that their largest capital investment over the next year will be for healthcare IT and telecommunications (data from Becker's Hospital Review, "43% of Hospital Executives Say Largest Capital Investments Will be in IT" ). RTLS solution could track and visualize the situation of patients, staffs and clinic equipments in real time to improve resource utilization and internal operation flow. In the case of National Cancer Center Singapore (NCCS), HKC's solution integrates into the existing hospital systems and provides a powerful medical resource allocation and management system for the ambulance treatment unit (ATU). The system can automatically assign the medical resources to the patients and medical resources are visualized to hospital staff, meanwhile patients are informed by shorter and more accurate waiting time notice. In the future, RTLS application could be used for environment monitoring in healthcare sector for reducing infection rates. With specific sensors, real-time data is transferred to central system and alert will be triggered when any abnormal data is captured. Temperature monitoring may also be applied to cold supply chain management for blood, organ and tissue that require a strict control on temperature.

With the advantages of easy-implementation and multi-functions of RTLS technologies, we foresee the deployment of RTLS solutions will expand to more sectors in human's daily life, and we will gain more direct benefits from RTLS technologies in the near future.
